Tong House is located on Napier Hill and was originally built in 1945. The house is now owned by a young couple who enjoy entertaining.
The clients wanted to open up the house (which was typically orientated towards the street) to the north facing deck and views. External walls remained in exactly the same location to help stay within budget whilst the back half of the house was completely re-planned.
The spatial layout was strongly influenced by the existing entry and hallway. This was continued to the rear of the house with the view across the valley being framed. The living, kitchen and dining areas face to the north. Sliding doors to the extended deck make the interior spaces feel larger and are perfect for entertaining. Windows have been carefully located for privacy and maximum light.
The design challenge lay in creating an open plan home that answered the clients brief whilst staying within the existing footprint. Tolerances were very fine!
