The manager’s farmhouse on this remote farm is located about 2 hours north of Napier. The house was very disjointed with various alterations completed throughout the years. The clients wish was for a cohesive plan with a defined formal entrance. The bigger picture included adding a laundry, area for wood storage within the garage, outside bathroom for the muddy farmer, coat and boot bay, large hot water cupboard for the hypothermic lambs, master bathroom and a defined place for the family dog to sleep.
The design challenge lay in creating a spatial layout that related to the existing house plan yet worked for the users in their everyday living. The material and colour palates were chosen to be fit for purpose and suitable in the farmhouse environment.
A large formal entrance was created to provide shelter from snow and rain. Special path and wall mounted lighting define the journey to the oversized cedar door creating a warm welcome to the farmhouse.
